Brutal Grief

Grief is a thorn in my sobbing soul
Blood is slowly seeping from the hole
My heart is chopped up, once I was whole
My body is devoid of its soul.

The smell of spices wafting in the air
The sound of the fan whirring noisily
The feel of soft pillows cradling my hair
All seem to soothe my aching heart quietly

I crave abnormal since that normal day
Where shadows had walked away from the light
If only I’d wake up in such a way
With no memory of fate’s futile fight

Although I knew I was losing you
I still hoped that you would be fine
I prayed for my wishes to come true
June was brutal, July crossed the line

The agony of losing you that way
My heart can’t relive the trauma again
I hope you are resting in peace, I pray
I seek an escape from the haunting pain

One day you were, then suddenly gone
Huddled by your bedside we cried
Hard to believe that the world goes on
To stop it that day we really tried.

Your untimely passing hurt a lot
We tried to cope with this tragedy
To celebrate your brave life we sought
To honour and preserve your legacy

Give me a sign and perform miracles
Show me where to find you and what to do
My thoughts keep going around in circles
Know that wherever you are, I love you.

    1. Thanks, Samanta. This poem is about a sister’s grief at losing her younger brother this July. The pain and heartbreak are her companions for life now. Am trying to deal with my loss.

  1. This was such a painfully beautiful poem. Really, grief is so brutal and changes the person and their lives whom it touches. Praying for your brother’s soul and may universe give you enough strength to bear this loss.
