Today’s prompt MISSING #FridayReflections
Why Don’t People Set Their Phones on Silent Mode During a Movie?
When you go to see a movie in a theater and hear somebody’s phone ring, how do you feel? Don’t you feel irritated, annoyed and frustrated? You curse the poor man or woman, whose phone is not on silent or vibrate mode during the movie. Do you ask the loud talkers to be silent and threaten them with eviction from the hall, if it rings again? Do you tell them to put it on silent mode for the duration of the movie? If you do any or all of the above, you are missing out on a lot of entertainment in real life ๐
Imagine you’re watching a movie in a theater in Delhi NCR. The movie is โRaeesโ, starring Shahrukh Khan and Nawazudin.
Just when an interesting plot is about to unfold on screen a phone rings and the ringtone is, โauntie police bula legiโ.
The man answers, โhello. Yes, speaking. No, I am not doing anything important. Go ahead; I am free to talk at the moment.โ
Meanwhile you are seething. This manโs loud voice is drowning out the intense dialogues of Shahrukh Khan in the movie. The man on the phone is merrily carrying on his deafening conversation with whoever is on the other side of the line.
โYes yes, send Yugbir. The order is for 10 lakhs. Give him 2 – 3 lakhs extra, just in case he requires the cash. He can use it, if need be. ย I will be coming to the office in 3 hourโs time. We will talk in detail then.โ
REAL OR REEL?
Meanwhile you get so engrossed listening to this real life story and its rich dialogues that you turn away from the screen and face this uncouth man sitting four rows ahead of you, to your right. You fail to pay heed to the confrontational scene happening between Shahrukh and Nawazudin in reel life on the giant screen to your left ๐
You don’t care about the climax of the movie. Instead, you want to know if Yugbir will need the extra two lakhs to complete the transaction and what is this mysterious transaction?
If you are lucky, while at the movies, you might end up listening to a couple of plots which could be made into full fledged blockbuster movies. Sometimes these are more interesting than the original movie you had paid through your nose for to watch. Just like your original movie paled in comparison to the real life drama of Yugbir with his lakhs and his secret mission ๐

Hahaha! It rarely happens that we donโt get angry at the person who takes the call and speaks like he is at his home, and the funniest part is he gets angry when someone else does that too.
But yeah, we do get to listen to real life plots maybe at some point we all try to connect with each other or see what was so important in the middle of a 600rupees movie that this man is talking!
Ramya, I hear you ๐ Such people are so clueless on how to behave in a movie hall, unapologetic too ๐ Thanks.
The real life story seems as good if not better than the reel one.loved this interesting twist to #friday reflections.
Amrita, Humor keeps life light and fun ๐ Thanks.
Hahaha! Bang on! If it is Raes or Tiger Zinda Hai, I wouldn’t mind listening to this man’s entire phone call. ๐ What a fun take on the prompt! I straight away wrote a sad poem ๐
Shalini, thank you. I too used to write about the first thing that used to cross my mind on reading the prompts, now I wait for the second and third choices and decide.
LOL! An annoying incidence could well be an engrossing and thoroughly engaging. Loved this idea of not getting irritated but instead getting entertained, Sulekha. With the prompt you have given me a new wonderful perspective.
By the way, why would Yugbir need a cash of 2lakhs, that too โin case?โ A sequel for this please in your awesome fluid styleโฆ
Anagha, thanks a ton for all the kind words of praise ๐ You have set the wheels turning in my head, the sequel sounds like fun ๐ Will try to write more on the ‘case’.
ha ha! If that is the conversation, I would lose the plot of Raees and find if this guy can hire me for 2-3 lacs a day ๐ What a fun post, Sulekha and slightly different too. ๐
Parul, Me too ๐ Thank you for your lovely comment.
Haha! I would normally get irritated if a person, one does not put his phone on silent inside a movie hall, and two picks up the phone. But this conversation even I wouldn’t ignore, what an interesting call!
Aditi, we all suffer such fools but don’t cause a scene by asking them to shut up unless they are being huge pains ๐ This one I found pretty interesting. Sometimes I wonder if this guy knows that people tend to listen to loud conversations and he was just faking it to sound important : ๐
Yes, this happens so many times when the real life happenings are so interesting than the boring movies ahead. Unless, it is BAHUBALI where you can miss a lot if you ignore a dialogue.
Well said, Geethica. Thanks
