A Reader or Writer…Which would you rather be?

“A word is dead when it is said, some say. I say it just begins to live that day ~ Emily Dickinson”

I have always wanted to write…even before I was born. Hard to imagine and believe, right? But then, according to me writers are eccentric specimen, the good ones are a bit demented and the real writers are insane. I am no Emily Dickinson or Elizabeth Browning, but I do express my emotions with as much intensity as they did. It is not possible to write and be unemotional about life. Life is like a beautiful painting with its many hues and textures, a person who can appreciate all the vibrant colours and understand the artist’s mind, is a real writer.

When does a person decide to become a writer? Is there a ceremony which takes place and the world is informed about this decision of the writer? No, a person becomes a writer when she starts sharing her feelings about every little thing in life, with the world. She sees a flower bloom and comments upon its beauty, a poem is born and so is a writer. A friend moves to a different city, she writes about the separation, a writer appears. She loses a loved one; she grieves and out of her tears is born a writer.

“I love thee to the level of everyday’s most quiet need by sun and candle light…I love thee with the breath, smiles, tears, of all my life~ Elizabeth Browning”

I can’t imagine feeling something and not writing about it, I am alive when I write. Books keep me company, I love reading and become a character in the book that I’m reading at the moment, sometimes it’s fun when the book is a happy, nice, and romantic one but it’s scary to be in the plot of a murder mystery or horror story.

I have a million stories I want to share with the world, and I will live even after I am long gone. Though I wear both the hats, of a reader and writer, writing is what keeps me going and saves my soul from corroding.I will end with a beautiful quote by my favorite author Emily Dickinson.

“He ate and drank the precious Words, his Spirit grew robust; He knew no more that he was poor, nor that his frame was Dust~ Emily Dickinson”

  1. @Janaki, thanks a ton for the visit and the compliment. I think most people write because if they don't they might go crazy. At least I do so because of this reason.

  2. Wow, I think I've read that writing is life for you several times in some comments and I love to hear that again and again Sulekha. I could feel your passion. Everything comes directly from your heart that's why I love all your posts and am moved and pushed to do creative stuffs along with them…

I'd do both. I love writing but I also like reading 😉

  3. "I am alive when I write"- This line says it all. It shows the passion of writing in you.. n that's all that makes a writer. Keep Posting 🙂

  4. Hi Sulekkha 🙂
I feel the same way – that I have more ideas than I could possibly ever get down! And then I also feel similarly about reading – that there are too many books and not enough lifetimes to read them all in!

  5. I appreciate the Emily Dickinson quotes. And your own words as well, expressed with pure authenticity. Writers write; that’s what they do.

"Trust in what you love, continue to do it, and it will take you where you need to go."
    ~ Natalie Goldberg on writing

  6. You're definetly a talented wordsmith and I'm thankful your stories are being told. I was an avid reader for years until Erin's death then an outpouring of feelings led me to sharing those thoughts with folks around the world. In adition to the blog I'm working on a childrens book featuring Erin which hopefully one day will get published. Hope you continue to share your stories with everyone and you certainly know I'll be reading!! Blessings 🙂
