Women’s Day – A Sonnet

The day hid its face, night cried silently

Vast void of nothingness was inky deep

She fought with the dark shadows valiantly

We all failed her, quiet shame is ours to keep.

Were there any witnesses to the act?

Did anyone hear her guttural cries?

From the fathomless hole where she is trapped

She tries to get out, believe me she tries.

She will emerge from the darkness hollow

Justice will prevail, her voice will be heard

She will take lead and others will follow

She will soar once again like a free bird.

See how high she flies, this is just the start.

This is the story of a bold brave-heart.

  1. This poem is powerful and deeply moving. It captures pain, resilience and triumph beautifully. The journey from darkness to hope is inspiring and the closing lines leave a strong sense of victory. A heartfelt and impactful piece! Great going, Sulekha!

  2. I love the way you hold the reader’s hand and guide them through the depths of darkness into hope and light! Beautiful verses that are evocative of an extremely painful reality that many women have gone through and are still navigating today. I hope more women can find the power to soar again and rise…like Maya Angelou’s lines…”And still I rise…”

  3. Esha, love your insightful comment. Many women are soaring high but an even greater number are still trapped. We will celebrate Women’s Day when all of us are out of the shadows and can feel the sun on our faces.
