This is my third post in the Blogging From A to Z Challenge (April 2016). My theme this year is “Travel”. Alphabet of the day is ‘C’

There are all kinds of travel destinations and means of travel. I sat on my chair and traveled today, easy on the pocket and good for the soul. Sit back, relax and enjoy the musings of my mind.

Today I traveled back to my childhood days and found some beautiful moments tucked away in the folds of time. The year was 1970 and the place was Bombay (Mumbai). I was 6 years old and my sister 8, we were awaiting news of our baby brother or sister, who was going to come home from the hospital. Our mother had been taken to the hospital last night and still there was no news of our new sibling, we couldn’t wait for dad to come get us. Finally he came home and told us about our baby brother who was waiting for us at the hospital with our mom. We were overjoyed and wanted to go see him immediately.

On reaching the hospital, we ran towards the room our mom was in, she looked tired but happy. We hugged her and peeped into the baby cot to look at our brother, he resembled a chubby doll. We lost interest in him the moment the attendant entered the room with a tray of food for our mother. I smelt the boiled eggs before I saw them sitting snugly in the hollow of the ceramic plate, there were four shiny eggs in the plate. I was ravenous, hadn’t eaten anything in all the excitement of seeing my baby brother, my sister was hungry too. Mom saw us eyeing the plate and smiled, and when I asked her if I could eat the boiled eggs, she nodded and told my sister to help herself to a couple of eggs too.

We ignored everybody around us; the new baby, mom, dad and our granny, grabbed two eggs each and demolished them within a few seconds. To date, our parents narrate this anecdote when we all get together at home. The joke never gets old 🙂

I smiled at this nearly four decades old memory and cracked open the shells of the couple of boiled eggs on my plate, made a note to call up sister and remind her of our infamous hungry adventure…bon appetit 🙂

  1. hahah.. It has brought back some of my memories too when my brother was born. I was 6 and I thought mom just bought him or picked him off the street. I just remember he was a tiny bundle, very red at the time with a head full of black curly hair.

  2. Aww, this was such a sweet memory Sulekha. I remember my daughter who was 5 years old when my son was born being very sad that he wouldnt look, smile or play with her!
    Cheers to childhood 🙂

  3. As kids we were so innocent and sweet. No apprehensions whatsoever. This was such a cute childhood memory. Enjoyed reading about it! 🙂

  4. That’s innocent childhood memories. Strange how sometimes these memories surface up all of a sudden.. Just the way they did for you.. I recently had a similar encounter with my childhood memories.. and what triggered it was a pile of bitter-gourds I saw lying with the vegetable vendor. I detested it so much as a kid.. but somehow the memories that were associated with it were pleasant… I couldn’t help feeling nostalgic, and crave for those innocent days again. And despite my dislike to the vegetable, I ended up buying a kilo of them 🙂 …. For memories sake :))…and after that I blogged about it and felt all the more nostalgic.
