Comparison: The Thief of Joy

Comparison: The Thief Of Joy

Linking in to the Comparison Blog Hop on Dangerous Linda and Everyday Gyaan.

Comparison is the thief of joy.

It is a robber  When we compare ourselves with others, we lessen our happiness. Everybody is different in looks, character, thinking, financially, morally, in every way. When we compare our lives to the lives of celebrities, we reduce our joys. It’s good to be rich and famous but not everybody, can be. I believe in being satisfied and happy with my life but still when I see a thin, attractive woman my age, I feel like I am not doing enough to be fit. I may be very happy with my gym routine, my fitness level and stamina but once I start the vicious cycle of comparing my body with another fitter woman’s, I feel unhealthy.  I have hypothyroidism, still I have managed to remain stress-free but I can’t compete with some one disease-free. So why compare and be miserable? Live life, smile and be happy. “Don’t compare, just be you.”

  1. I love the images that you've selected, Sulekha. Yes, often we do try to compare apples and oranges don't we. I think we inflict the worst comparisons on ourselves. I like your closing line – Don't compare, just be you. I'm glad you're YOU. ♥

    1. Thanks Corinne, My dear Mitr, Kriti, suggested the fruits picture and I jumped at the chance to be an amateur photographer. we are our worst enemies, sometimes 🙂 Appreciate your lovely compliment.

  2. Good point – be happy with what we have when we have it. But the damn devil in my head doesn't listen sometimes : ( Maybe hanging around with you more often will help. Lovely pics Mitr : )

    1. Kriti, You are a delight to hang around with and I love chatting with you 🙂 Thanks for the ideas for the pictures, You Rock.

  3. Hi, Sulekha! ~

You get right to the heart of the matter — I like your straight-forward POV!

It is interesting to me that, although I agree with your words, I could not stop myself from comparing the contrasting subjects you set up in each of your photos.

How do I bridge the gap between the natural inclination of my human brain to compare and the nudging of my higher wisdom to enjoy the present moment in the purest sense without comparing it to anything else?

    Thank you for sharing!!!

    1. It's an ongoing battle, Linda. We have to be stronger and emerge victorious. Thanks for the visit and the comment. Great initiative for a blog hop.

  4. I like your positive outlook…that's right ya know the grass is always greener on the other side ..until we get there..and then we find were are just fine being who we are….As always…XOXOXOXOO

  5. Hi Sulekha. 🙂 I have a friend who also has hypothyroidism and she is having a difficult time trying to lose weight. Although she's not really overweight. She just wants to be thinner which, I guess, all started when her boyfriend started seeing a girl who is skinny and seemingly more confident than her. I saw how she skipped meals and heard her talk about the flaws in her body all the time.

Comparison is such a simple word that robs us of our joy. But just like you said, “Don’t compare, just be you.” And I couldn't agree more! 🙂

    1. Irene, I am so glad to see you here 🙂 Thanks for visiting and your thoughtful comment. Smile and be you always 🙂

  6. I love your simplicity Sulekha 🙂 You have stressed your point in very few words. I didn't know you have hypothyroidism. Now I understand you and your activities better.

I'm glad you choose happiness over … 😉 so we need to compare inorder to see the other side 🙂

  7. Definitely, SUlekha!! And I love the statement – Just be YOU.. simply love it. I resolve to just be me. Right here. I am. But no harm in reminding myself this way. Thanks for such a lovely statement…!!

  8. I have to agree, Sulekha, that your message is so important. We have to appreciate what we ourselves have to offer and not look to be like anyone else. Nice post.

    1. Sweepy, Sorry for not participating in the carnival, will do soon, promise. Thank you friend 🙂

  9. Hello Sulekha.
You hit the nail on the head with this one! When we constantly compare ourselves to others, we are just making our selves & the ones around us miserable. Even though we were all created equal, we are still different. I love being me & wouldn't want to be anyone else. I too liked the imagery you used.
    Nice take on the topic.
    Thanks for sharing.

  10. Hi Sulekha, I have hypothyroidism too. From the condition I have issues with my hair and find myself longing for better looking locks…

Your take on comparison is short and sweet! It’s great advice too!

    1. Patty, welcome to my site and thank you for your kind words. Yes, hormonal imbalance plays havoc with the mind 🙂 Thank you for visiting.

  11. Sulekha, kudos to you for striving to be healthy, for embracing who you are and not allowing anything to get in the way of achieving self fulfillment. You are an inspiration to us all! I love, love the apple and orange photo! It doesn’t get more concrete than that! 🙂

  12. Hey there this is a superb write-up. I’m going to e-mail this to my friends. I came on this while browsing on aol I’ll be sure to come back. thanks for sharing.

  13. As long as I am true to myself, i don't need to compare myself to anyone. The only comparison I still do, is related to love. Since I am a child, i always compared how much my sisters are loved compared to what i got from my parents.

  14. " so why compare and be miserable?" it requires such a simple response, yet I can complicate it! I am so much better about comparing now more so than ever.

    1. Amy, welcome to my website and thanks for your comment. We all complicate our lives by comparing 🙂

  15. Great images for comparison. I know we humans have the tendency to do things like this, but … we shouldn't.. If I catch myself doing this I stop. I am what I am and have to be happy about that or else.. as you say, a person could be miserable.

  16. I’m still learning from you, but I’m trying to achieve my goals. I certainly love reading all that is written on your site.Keep the stories coming. I enjoyed it!
