I Love You Only On Valentine’s Day:)

Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.  ~Emily Brontë

Love happens, it’s not planned like a birthday party, an outing or a picnic. It quietly creeps up on to you, wriggles its way into your porous soul. It lacks manners and doesn’t even knock while invading your personal space. It just assumes it will be welcomed inside and proceeds to take over your life completely. Love reigns over your heart and makes no excuses for being so incorrigible. Love is magic.

If you press me to say why I loved him, I can say no more than because he was he, and I was I.  ~Michel de Montaigne

Today is Valentine’s day and I saw some very happy florists on my way to the mall. Surprisingly, only guys were standing around, waiting for their bouquets to be wrapped, pink bow and all. Where were the ladies? I love buying flowers for my man and was under the impression other women also made these gestures for their guys. I would have loved to see more women haggling with the florists.

Love is when you can be your true self with someone, and you only want to be your true self because of them.  ~Terri Guillemets

I love romance, I love love stories, romantic comedy shows, movies about love, love songs, love tales…I follow love around in my dreams too 🙂 But I don’t do all these things only on February 14th every year. I buy flowers anytime I feel like saying, ‘I Love you’ to him. I don’t wait for valentine’s day to express my feelings, I don’t write down the time and date when the thought of saying I love you, crossed my mind. I would be so exhausted if I had to memorize all the times I didn’t say ‘I love you to him’, and had to rattle off hundreds of I LOVE YOUs 🙂 on 14th Feb, every year.

We picture love as heart-shaped because we do not know the shape of the soul.  ~Robert Brault

According to Paulo Coelho, “Love is an untamed force. When we try to control it, it destroys us. When we try to imprison it, it enslaves us. When we try to understand it, it leaves us feeling lost and confused.”

So why do we even try to restrict this untamed force to only one day in a year? Let everyday be a Valentine’s day and let this magical feeling linger in the air, all year round. Happy Valentine’s Year.

True love stories never have endings.  ~Richard Bach

  1. I do agree with you sulekha…….as i always feel love cannot be only felt and expressed only on this day….you have to live it on day to day basis.

  2. My husband always says to me that "every day is a holiday." It use to make me mad because I got so sick of his nonchalant way of saying "it's just another day." It was as if he was degrading every day he spent with me and our children. I know he means just as you are saying, he doesn't practice it but, he believes in it and that is a good start. Thank you for your insight into Valentine's Day and love. Happy Valentine's Day to you and yours.

    1. Jenni, It's the overly demonstrative ones that we have to look out for, they are up to something 😉 Regular guys are better at love..thanks for the lovely compliment.

  3. This is so beautiful Sulekha! I love Paulo Coelho and Richard Bach 🙂 They so believe in love like you do. While it is true that everyday should be Valentine's Day, it's also wonderful to remember a date when these romantic feelings could be intensified… the way we celebrate anniversaries and Christmas 🙂

Thank you for reinforcing positive points in your posts 🙂 You make my heart brighter 🙂

    1. Melissa, You have to love Paulo Coelho, he writes about love 🙂 I have most of his books and I love reading them, again and again. I am not against Valentine's day only against the commercialization of this day <3

  4. I agree that love should be shown to our partners and loved ones everyday, but I don't want Valentine's Day to be everyday….I love the season's greetings 😉
Enjoyed you post girl 🙂 and love the quote, “Love is an untamed force. When we try to control it, it destroys us. When we try to imprison it, it enslaves us. When we try to understand it, it leaves us feeling lost and confused.”
Happy Valentine's Day to you 🙂

  5. This is so true Sulekha! Love is unpredictable and wonderful and should be celebrated every day! Beautiful post.
I loved this quote, According to Paulo Coelho, “Love is an untamed force. When we try to control it, it destroys us. When we try to imprison it, it enslaves us. When we try to understand it, it leaves us feeling lost and confused.”
    Happy Valentine's Day beautiful lady!

  6. All true. Love is love and no matter what you do it remains. I can attest to that. Love is a life long Valentine's for me. beautiful post. <3<3<3

  7. Me amd my man compliment each other on the "flower buying" thing : ). Neither of us remember to do it – LOL. I absolutely agree that the Valentine's Day – just that day – is too restrictive for expressing love. I think I do it everyday in so many small gestures too – when I cook his favorite meal, when I make sure his clothes are clean. This is also an emotion that does not really need too many words, even though that is an important part of the relationship as well… Loved being here as always…

    1. Little things do matter a lot, mitr. Saying I love you one day doesn't make their love immortal 🙂 thank you

  8. well said Sulekha. __i am sure everyone does their bit whenever they can to express their love. having said that, life happens, people get thrown off, problems take over, priorities loom and love ends up takes a back seat. __i actually like the idea of celebrating love and everything it encompasses on a particular day. a day like this one slows people down, helps them realize how important love is and gives folks the opportunity to share it with their loved one. i think what gets people about this day and it is becoming more and more evident irritating is the commercialization of the day- the crappy gifts, cards, songs marketeers entice people to buy.

  9. I read this yesterday Sulekha, and it touched me..u are right about it…Faith makes all things possible. Hope makes all things work. Love makes all things beautiful.Life spent with someone for a life time may be meaningless. But a moment spent with someone who really loves you is more than life itself.

  10. Hello Sulekha.
Some people only remember the beauty of love and what it means to them once a year. I am not, nor have I ever been a once a year man. Love lives in me 24/7/365 (6). I never turn it off, it never runs dry. Even when I feel like the world's troubles are weighing heavy on my shoulders, I live, eat, breathe love. Love to me is like breathing…both are required to exist. When everything around us is withering and dying…including those Valentine's flowers, love remains eternal, timeless. Everyday I have life, I tell my wife I love her. We write each other notes and leave them in hidden places for the other one to find. Even when we're annoyed at each other, we still love each other.

Valentine's has become so commercialized that I actually find it annoying. You can't put a price or value on the heart, just like you can't put a price on love.
Your words here are spoken by someone who truly knows what love means.
    Thanks for sharing.

  11. I really liked dis one sulekha, I believe the same n i don believe in valentine's day much bt yes i do love the aura in air the happiness on couple's face n hw they make it special for their beloved. For me a chat over a cup of coffee in free time, lying for hours with beloved, lil gestures, beautifl surpirses anything can be romantic and it is not abt physicality anyday..
I just know onething Love is Love just no reasoning..

    Beautiful post with great quotations.

  12. Sulekha, if every day were Valentine’s Day, the world would be a sweeter, nicer, and lovelier place! And I agree–why is it women don’t incur in the practice of buying flowers for their men. Flowers should not be limited to being received by women. Men have the same right to receive something as beautiful as a bouquet of blooms! 🙂

    1. Yes, we need a whole lot of days filled with love. I buy my man flowers but not on Valentine's day 🙂 thanks

  13. ..loved dis post…
..lets nt celebrate love only on valentines day…
..let every day, every minute n every moment of our lives..b brimming wid dollops n dollopsof love fr our loved ones…
..love does not seek reason to love..love does nt need an occasion to love…
..love just wants us to b in love all d time…

  14. Appreciate your comment and to each his/her own 🙂 Some people like to dress up and go out, get gifts, give presents, eat out and paint the town red in the name of Valentine's Day and some smile at each other over the top of their kid's head, sleeping in the mother's arms 🙂

  15. Happy Valentines' to you the whole year through. Of course, there cannot be a day/season of love…its everyday…it should be! <3

  16. A beautiful thought Sulekha. Yes perhaps true love doesn't need days or expressions of this kind. Everyday romance is far more beautiful..

    Richa

  17. Love should be everyday but personally I don't need hearts, flowers, candy, etc. everyday to know my husband loves me. It is enough that he keeps coming back for more and is still standing here today for me. He has been there for me since I met him many moons ago. I think if Valentine's Day was everyday it would probably lose its value. It wouldn't be special anymore.
